About the Course
Heme is an iron-containing prosthetic group that plays a vital role in oxygen transport, electron transfer, detoxification, and cellular respiration. Porphyrins are cyclic tetrapyrrole compounds that form the structural backbone of heme and determine its unique chemical and biological properties. This course explains the structure of porphyrins and heme, the diverse physiological functions of heme-containing proteins, the relationship between porphyrin structure and its physical and chemical characteristics, and the clinical significance of porphyrin structure especially in disorders such as porphyrias.-
