This module introduces the concept of Locking and Unlocking mechanism of Knee joint. The knee joint becomes locked during the final stage of extension. During this process, the femur rotates medially on the tibia in weight-bearing situations. This rotation tightens all the ligaments of knee joint, making the joint highly stable. Locking allows a person to stand upright for long periods with minimal muscular effort. The mechanism is aided by the longer articular surface of the medial femoral condyle and the action of the quadriceps muscle. Before flexion can occur, the knee must be unlocked. The Popliteus muscle initiates unlocking by rotating the femur laterally on the fixed tibia. This reverses the locking and permits knee flexion to begin.-
