Integration of Metabolism

About the Course

It is pertinent to understand the metabolic pathways and their integration in a healthy individual during the well fed state, in order to determine how the metabolic activities are altered in conditions such as starvation and diabetes. The lesson on 'Metabolism under fed state" provides detailed insight into the metabolic activities that are predominant in the fed state. This lecture provides details on the mechanisms of how following a carbohydrate rich meal, high blood glucose levels stimulates secretion of insulin that in turns promotes anabolic pathways such as glycogenesis, lipogenesis and protein synthesis. The integration of these pathways in the liver, adipose tissue and extrahepatic tissues is detailed herein. The lessons on Metabolic alterations during overnight fasting/early starvation and advanced starvation and the lesson on Metabolic alterations in diabetes Mellitus provide details of the various metabolic alterations that occur in the body in these conditions, to maintain the basal levels of blood glucose that is required to make available glucose as metabolic fuel to tissues majorly dependent on glucose., The metabolic and clinical complications associated with diabetes are discussed in detail.
