Blood-Air Barrier

About the Course

In this lecture you will learn about the structure of the blood-air barrier at the level of the alveoli of the lung. This has implications in in the functioning of the lung and pathologies affecting it. The thickness of the blood-air barrier determines the efficiency of the diffusion of oxygen from air into blood. Hence, pathology affecting the alveolar epithelium, capillaries or the interstitium between these two would present as difficulty in breathing due to systemic hypoxemia.
