About the Course
Heme is released from hemoproteins. It is finally degraded to biliverdin and bilirubin. Bilirubin is transported in blood bound to albumin. Bilirubin is taken up by liver and it gets conjugated. It is secreted into intestine by (rate limiting step) active process. In intestine, it is converted into urobilinogen and stercobilinogen. An increase in bilirubin level leads to jaundice.Dr. Sarika Munghate
