About the Course

The corticospinal, frontopontine and temporopontine fibers pass through the cerebral peduncle. The corticonuclear fibers synapsing with the facial nucleus, nucleus ambiguus and hypoglossal nucleus along with oculomotor nerve fibers pass through the peduncle. Ischemia of the peduncle give rise to Weber’s syndrome characterised by upper motor neuron paralysis of the opposite side of the body along with ipsilateral lateral strabismus, dilatation of pupil and drooping of eyelid.
Ischemia extending to the anterolateral part give rise to Benedikt’s syndrome characterised by loss of pain touch temperature and vibration sensation of the opposite side of the body along with ipsilateral ataxia and tremor as medial and lateral lemniscus and red nucleus are affected.
