About the Course
Glycogen is the main storage form of glucose in humans. A continuous supply of glucose is absolutely necessary for human beings as it is the preferred source of energy for brain and the essential energy source for cells who have less or no mitochondria for example the erythrocytes. Dietary source of glucose in the form of and glucose precursors are not a reliable source of glucose and gluconeogenesis though being a sustained source of glucose is a very slow process, hence, the body utilizes glycogen as the ready and rapidly utilised source of glucose for sustaining the blood sugar levels (Liver Glycogen) and for muscle performing vigorous exercise. Glycogen metabolism involves glycogenesis and glycogenolysis which are opposing pathways and need to be tightly regulated to avoid futile cycles. This set of two lessons explains the pathways of glycogen synthesis and breakdown and its reciprocal regulation.-
