Hydrocephalus in children is a medical condition in which excess cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) accumulates in the brain’s ventricles. This buildup increases pressure inside the skull and can affect brain development. It may occur due to birth defects, infections, brain tumors, or bleeding in the brain. Common symptoms in infants include an unusually large head, vomiting, irritability, and bulging soft spots (fontanelles). Older children may experience headache, vision problems, poor balance, and learning difficulties. If untreated, hydrocephalus can lead to brain damage and developmental delays. Treatment usually involves surgical procedures such as placing a shunt to drain the excess fluid. Early diagnosis and treatment greatly improve the child’s outcome and quality of life.
