The GUT Brain Axis

About the Course

The Gut-Brain Axis refers to the bidirectional communication network between the gastrointestinal tract and the brain. It involves complex interactions between the central nervous system (CNS) and the enteric nervous system (ENS), influenced by hormonal, neural, and immune pathways. This axis plays a crucial role in regulating various physiological processes, including digestion, metabolism, immune function, and even mood and cognition. Emerging research suggests that gut microbes, collectively known as the gut microbiota, play a significant role in this axis, influencing brain function and behavior through the production of neurotransmitters and other signaling molecules. Understanding the Gut-Brain Axis has implications for treating disorders like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), depression, and anxiety through interventions that target gut health and microbiota balance.
